Safe Sleep Tips for Babies: What Every Parent Should Know

When it comes to your baby’s health and development, safe sleep practices are essential. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, thousands of infant deaths can be prevented each year with proper sleep environments and routines. Here's how to create a safe, soothing sleep space for your little one—so you can both rest easy.

1. Back to Sleep, Every Time

Always place your baby on their back to sleep—for naps and overnight. This position reduces the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Once your baby can roll over independently, it's okay to let them find their own sleep position.

2. Use a Firm, Flat Sleep Surface

Your baby should sleep in a crib, bassinet, or portable play yard with a firm mattress and fitted sheet only. Avoid soft bedding, pillows, or sleep positioners, as these can pose suffocation hazards. For approved sleep products, refer to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

3. Room Sharing Is Recommended

Keep your baby’s sleep space in the same room where you sleep for at least the first 6–12 months. Room-sharing (not bed-sharing) can significantly reduce the risk of SIDS and makes nighttime feeds easier.

4. Keep the Crib Clutter-Free

Less is more when it comes to the crib. No stuffed animals, bumpers, blankets, or toys. A wearable sleep sack or swaddle is the safest way to keep your baby warm.

5. Avoid Overheating

Dress your baby in lightweight, breathable layers and keep the room at a comfortable temperature (68–72°F). Signs of overheating include sweating, flushed cheeks, or damp hair.

6. Promote Safe Naps, Too

Safe sleep rules apply during daytime naps just as they do at night. Supervised tummy time when your baby is awake helps develop motor skills and reduces flat spots on the head.
