A good night’s sleep is essential—for both babies and parents! But beyond comfort, sleep safety is a top concern during the first year of life. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), creating a safe sleep environment is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
💤 Safe Sleep Guidelines for Infants
-
Back to Sleep, Every Time
Always place your baby on their back for naps and nighttime sleep—never on the stomach or side. -
Use a Firm, Flat Mattress
Your baby’s crib, bassinet, or play yard should have a tight-fitting sheet and no added padding or cushions. -
Keep the Crib Bare
Avoid soft toys, pillows, blankets, and bumper pads. A wearable blanket or sleep sack is a safe alternative. -
Share a Room, Not a Bed
Room-sharing (without bed-sharing) is recommended for at least the first 6 months. Use a separate sleep surface close to your bed. -
Avoid Overheating
Dress your baby in lightweight sleep clothing and keep the room at a comfortable temperature.
🔍 Watch for Developmental Changes
Once your baby can roll over on their own, continue putting them to sleep on their back, but it’s okay if they roll during sleep.
